The Tram Museum
Open every 2nd Saturday, 11am – 5pm
8 Wallen Road, Hawthorn

Explore the history of trams and how they have contributed to your city.  The tram museum is a wonderful place for children and adults.  It is open the Second and Fourth Saturday of every month for a GOLD coin donation from 11am till 5pm.  You can explore the wonders of 21 fully restored trams and you can even get a guided tour from an expert for free!  Kids will delight in being able to play in all the old trams as they can pretend to drive, ring the bell or role play being passengers or conductors. The tram museum is truly a wonderful trip out.

NGV International, Ground Level
17 Oct 14 – 12 Apr 15
The NGV is a visual feast at any time but new installations and special exhibitions take this to a whole new level.  It is a great time to take the kids with many interactive displays and loads to see and do.

Until the 12th April NGV for kids is showing Express Yourself- Romance is Born! ( don’t forget to see what happens when you blow gently on the wall of sequins at the entrance) An exciting display of fashion is followed by movie star mirrors where children are given a gift of glittering baubles and a template to make their own beards (yes beards!!) and necklaces (reinvent to a headdress…). Move on to a series of multimedia environs where there is an overload of fun!

Switch things up and head to the third floor where there is a monumental hanging piece named The Island Bird. It spans over 10meters long suspended above the ground, and consists of a labyrinthine, tunnel-like structures of crocheted rope for visitors to climb into and explore. It will be hard to get the kids to move on but also hard to resist yourself!  A recent acquisition this piece hopefully will be around for a while.
After an active morning exploring the galleries don’t forget your picnic lunch to take outside to the rear garden to enjoy a tranquil shady respite. A gallery visit isn't complete without a quick stop at the water wall on the way out for a play, lick (yes my child has done that!) and toss a coin in the fountain out the front with a special wish!
